Springtime is here and you want to have a great looking lawn this year. A great looking lawn not only includes the grass, it is how your landscape looks as well. The landscape will beautify any lawn; however, it is the way that you plan your landscape that makes it look good. If you are planning to set more plants or different plants, first draw it out on a piece of paper. This will give you a plan and you can make changes as you prepare the area for your landscape.
Inspecting
Everyone wants nice looking grass, so, you should walk around the lawn, check to see if the winter rains have washed away part of the grass, or caused holes in the lawn. Many times the rain will puddle up around low sections of the lawn and you should mark them and repair them during the spring. This may call for planting new grass seed.
Watering the grass is very important during this time of year. Do not water the lawn in the early morning hours; as the sun gets to its highest point it will dry the grass out to quickly and may cause it to wilt. Instead, wait until the evening to begin watering, for instance, around 4:00 P.M. would be a great time, the hottest part of the day has gone by, and the night air is still warm enough to keep the leaves and the roots moist. Water the lawn long enough to allow the water to penetrate the ground for approximately 2 inches.
Fertilizing
You should use fertilizer at least once during the spring months to help the grass grow greener and thicker. Aerating the lawn will loosen the dirt to give the roots room to grow stronger and deeper. Select fertilizer that a good amount of nitrogen. Experts say that during April thru May you should use 1/2 to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1000 square feet. You should not have to fertilize the lawn again until fall.
Mowing
For a nice looking lawn, pull the blades up to approximately 3 inches off the ground. This will make your lawn thick and allow the grass to grow much faster. Many people do not have grass catchers on their lawn mower, and do not like the grass cut lines that the lawn more throws from underneath it. Try mowing counter clockwise. This way the grass that has been thrown out will be recut to a much finer mulch, and by the time you are finished, you will not see any cut lines at all.
Unwanted Pests
This is a good time to also inspect the lawn again to find any unwanted pests; fire ants are prone to choosing, it seems, your lawn to set up housekeeping. A good way to tell if you have any small critters in the lawn is to watch the birds, if there are any sort of unwanted pests in your lawn, the birds will show you where they are.
Weeds
As the spring season begins, you may soon see some unwanted weeds pop up in certain areas of the lawn. Choose a good weed killer that will work on the weeds without damaging the grass; this may take some experimenting with different weed killers.
