How Long Are Shipping Quotes Valid?

Home » Business  » How Long Are Shipping Quotes Valid?

When you are doing business with a local courier service, especially if you are making a different kind of shipment than you usually make, or making your first shipment with a company, the first thing you are probably going to do is obtain a quote for your shipping costs, unless you are required to start an account before obtaining a quote in which case that is what you would do first. Sometimes, what a good business owner will do before committing to any given courier is they will shop around for different shipping quotes in order to get the best price. Most business owners will do this with any support service that they have to employ in order to help make sure that they are saving as much money as possible. However, they don't want their quotes to expire, so often they want to know how long a quote is good for from the time that it is issued.

The exact amount of time that a quote is good for may shift depending on the particular courier service that you are doing business. If you are provided a written quote, it will say on the slip how long the quote is valid for. Be sure to ask for how long they are good for in order to ensure you take advantage of the best rate while the quote is still valid. If you obtain multiple quotes it is important to make sure that they are all good for the same amount of time so you don't accidentally lose the best price.

However, even if a reputable courier service offers you a quote that is good for thirty days, there are often a number of items in the fine print which let you know that the quote is not set in stone, and there are a number of things which could cause it to be raised. The most common factor that influences a changing quote rate is if a shipment is based on weight and a customer misrepresents the weight of their shipment because they are simply estimating. In these cases, most quotes will stipulate that the rate is subject to change pending the actual weighting of the cargo. Terms like this should be stated clearly in the quote, or you can also ask a representative of the courier company to explain any costs in the quote that could change from the time it was issued to when your invoice is due if you choose to use that company's services.
