It was with shock and amazement when I read about Michael Phelps admitting to smoking pot and the reaction to it. First off who really cares? Before I get into a discussion about why this isn't a big deal, the douche bag that took the photo of Phelps should be hunted down and beaten. What a jerk, imagine one of your friends or one of your friends - friends doing this to you. They were probably in someone's home not bothering anyone and this guy or gal decided to take this photo and sell it to the tabloids. I guess that is the other part about this story that bothers me, the media is wasting a lot of time covering a story that doesn't really matter to most of the world.
I happen to live in Canada and I can assure you that only a small minority of right wing religious zealots think this is worse than have a beer. I am not a pothead in fact I can't stand the smell of pot, it really does make me nauseous. That being said I can't figure out for the life of me why a plant, that grows naturally is illegal? Let's see here, we are in the middle of one of the worst economies that most generations will ever see or have seen, I think I just figured out how to fix it! Not only would legalizing marijuana make financial sense it would take many drug dealers out of the market and I think one of the biggest concerns with buying pot on the street is the fact that much of it is tainted.
The news today is that Kellogg's has decided to fire Michael Phelps because he admitted that is was in fact pot in the giant bong he had strapped to his mount, shock. Does this make any sense at all, even in the US it is said that 42% of Americans regularly smoke the stuff and another 25% plus don't have a problem with people smoking, much like myself. That's almost 75% of the American public that will be totally offended by Kellogg's decision, really smart guys!
The 50's are long gone, it's 2009 Kellogg's and most Americans and most of us living on this planet that have access to your crappy cereal are going to think this move was really stupid! Maybe this is the wakeup call advertisers in general needed!
The swimming association that banned him for three months would they done so if Michael was caught drinking a beer or having a Martini? I don't think so! Whether you think smoking pot is similar to drinking beer or not, I think we can all agree Kellogg's made a mistake as did the swimming association and that jerk that took the picture. This guy will go down as the best Olympian of all time and after putting on one of the most amazing displays of athleticism isn't he entitled to have a little r and r?
