It is common knowledge that we Americans really love eating out. Sometimes we do it because it is a necessity if we are on our lunch break from work or maybe on a business trip somewhere. Most of the time it is just because we do not want to cook at home and for some people it is just as economical to eat out instead of cooking. For some people it is just more convenient to eat out because they work long hours and never feel much like cooking for themselves after a long hard day.
If you get right down to it, some of us just enjoy being waited on and catered to and that is what we usually get when we eat out in a nice restaurant. If that is what we are looking for when we do dine out, then there are certain things that we expect. We want a nice waiter or waitress that is polite and knowledgeable about the restaurant they work in. We want promptness and attention when we need something. We want good food at a good price.
We usually get all of these things at a reputable restaurant, but there is one thing that might be missing from your table these days that you might not have even noticed, but then again, maybe you did. Water. In days gone by it was always customary for the restaurant to serve a glass of ice water to every customer at a table before anything else. That is not always the case today.
You might wonder why this is happening at restaurants everywhere, but there are good reasons. The main reason being that not everyone wants a glass of water and what is the sense of wasting a clean glass and the water in it if someone never even touches it? It makes extra work and more dirty dishes for the restaurant to provide something that many people do not even want.
You also might think that it is only a glass of water and what does it hurt for them to put it on the table anyway even if you do not drink it? Conservation comes to mind when you think like that. The better question is why would you waste a perfectly good glass of water for no reason? There are shortages of water all over the world and we take ours for granted in many cases. It is actually a good thing that restaurants decided to stop the practice of serving water unless of course, it is requested. That is all you have to do to still get that cold glass of ice water if you want it. Just ask for it and it will usually be brought to you right away at no charge just like in the past.
